NEW YORK — An ISIS supporter planned to bomb our State Capitol, kill New York lawmakers, and then flee to ISIS-controlled territory in Syria.

I commend the FBI, Department of Justice, New York State Police, Albany Police Department, and every law enforcement officer whose work stopped this attack before innocent people were killed.

As a federal terrorism prosecutor who served on New York’s Joint Terrorism Task Force for over a decade and put Al-Qaeda and ISIS terrorists in prison, I know how seriously these threats must be taken.

Terrorism is not a threat that exists somewhere far away. It is here, and protecting New Yorkers requires constant vigilance, intelligence sharing, and close cooperation between federal, state, and local law enforcement.

Keeping New Yorkers safe must always come first. Always.
