15th Subway Pushing This Year Reinforces Need for Stronger Transit Crime Enforcement

New York, NY – “Fifteen subway pushes in less than seven months. Fifteen. That should shock every single New Yorker.

This morning, a 70-year-old woman was shoved onto the tracks by a stranger in Midtown Manhattan and hospitalized with a head injury. No one should have to fear being attacked simply for standing on a subway platform.

Under Letitia James, New Yorkers have been forced to accept lawlessness on our transit system as a fact of life. They shouldn’t have to. Public safety is government’s first responsibility, and today’s attack is another reminder that our leaders have failed to protect the people they serve.

That’s why I have already proposed a comprehensive transit crime crackdown. As Attorney General, I will create a Transit Crimes Strike Force to ensure transit crimes are prosecuted and to step in when local prosecutors refuse to act. I will work with the MTA to ban repeat and violent offenders from the transit system, support stronger penalties for crimes committed on public transit, create a new felony offense for pushing someone onto train tracks, and support legislation to allow judges to detain these dangerous offenders so that they are not immediately released back onto our streets.

New Yorkers should not have to wonder whether they’ll make it home safely after getting on a train. We have the tools to solve this problem. What we’ve been lacking is leadership.
